In 1990 at the Silverstone F1 Grand Prix, during a pit lane tyre check and with the full grandstand in the background, a 200˚ field of view shot was made of Ayrton Senna in his McLaren.
Today the original photograph, made with a rotary camera and never published has come out of the archives enriching the history of the formidable alliance between Senna and McLaren.
Thanks to the great resolution provided by its large film transparency, the photograph is now available in giant format and can be displayed to deliver three dimension real life perspectives. No optical distortion at all!
Video clip: All optical distortions are avoided by displaying the photograph in semi-circular fashion. By viewing from the centre point, a 200˚ visual field can be seen with perfect optical accuracy.
Surrounded by the activity of a pit lane tyre check, a solitary Ayrton Senna in his car prepares himself for re-joining the track while Pierluigi Martini in his Minardi waits. It’s almost as though we are sharing an intimate moment with Senna on 15th July 1990.
70mm film is a wide high-resolution film gauge for motion pictures as well as for the rotary camera used for this 200˚ shot. The film area is 18 times larger than that of a standard 24x36mm film.
Video clip: A sample of print resolution. The huge pixel count enables enlargement to extreme sizes with crisp image detail.
Video clip: When viewed on a flat plane, the original image shows large distortions. For printing purposes (postcards, posters, canvas ...) perspective corrections have been made.
Plan: The surface area required to exhibit a photograph of 10 metres length plus its stand where the car will be represented in real life size (4.5 metres).
